The “No Child Left Behind” (NCLB) Act requires parents of English language learners (ELL) participating in Washington’s Transitional Bilingual Instructional Programs (TBIP) and/or Title III programs to be notified each year of Annual Measurable Achievement Objectives (AMAOS) for the school district.

When it comes to public education, there’s a lot to celebrate. Educators, students, parents, policymakers, and communities are working together and getting great results. Washington’s fourth- and eighth-grade students continue to perform above the national average in reading and math. Washington State students consistently score higher than the national average on the ACT and on the SAT, Washington students had the highest average scores in the nation among states where more than half the eligible students took the test. This is particularly exciting because the number of kids taking the SAT in Washington is high when compared to many other states.

These very real accomplishments show that our schools need – and have earned – continued support. The commitment to improve must be a shared goal in which the educators, students, parents, policymakers, and communities are engaged.

This year, November 13–19 is Focus on Education Week in Washington State, which coincides with the 90th anniversary of American Education Week. School districts across Washington, including White Salmon Valley School District, are inviting legislators and community members to learn more about their public schools and understand the often difficult, but always important, work we do. We encourage the public to use this opportunity to see what’s really going on in our schools, classrooms, and to learn more about how everyone can play a role in ensuring future growth and success in schools everywhere. Once you see for yourself, you just may become a public school partner – even a champion – ready to work with us on our goals and in helping us build on efforts that continue to promote outstanding instruction and learning.
